The Fashion World has roared: “Prints are in.”

I was bold in junior high.  I wore various printed tops to class: bright beetles and satin comic-strips.  It got attention.

The chutzpah slipped away in high school, and ultimately disappeared in college.  The mantra on campus was look like everyone else.

Spring 2011 Fashion is not my motivating factor.   {Enter red-head and The Magic School Bus.}

Ms. Frizzle.  The teacher’s fancy frocks remind me of true glamour.

Where does Ms. Frizz shop?  Does she design her own clothing line?  Is she on Match.com?  Is her first name Fran? Lots. of. questions.

Despite my fictitious admiration for the scientist, I do realize she does not exist. But I do believe that many crafty women carry little pieces of Ms. Frizz’s splendor and philosophy as they roam the streets.

Let the Frizzle wild.  Rock the rhinos.

NYC Beekeeper Ezra Hug

Urban beekeeping is in.

After serving as an “apprentice” to NYC beekeeper Ezra Hug last year, I am thrilled to manage my first hive this spring.  Interested?  Take a course with The NYC Beekeepers Association.

The NYCBA is offering a course in 2011 for the absolute beginner and novice beekeeper.  This course is 12 hours long, spread out over four Sundays, AND it offers an apiary visit in April.  The NYCBA volunteer instructors are professional beekeepers with a collective half century of buzz-worthy experience.  The fee is $150.00 for the entire course which includes the following:

* construction of a bee hive
* safe hive placement
* general maintenance
* troubleshooting in the hive
* processes and lifecycle within the colony
* diseases and treatments

Beyond the fact that beekeeping is a HUGE conversation-starter (great for first dates + business interviews), you will also learn how to invigorate your vegetables while contributing to the environment and ensuring yourself as much as 120 lbs of pure raw honey per year per hive.  Yum.

This course teaches everything you need to know to start or continue your fascinating love story with the bees.  Learn about this fulfilling and rewarding hobby.  Become a beekeeper.  It is easier than you may think, and more intriguing that you might imagine.

I’d love to hear from you if you take the course!

I'm in the blue shirt at the Red Feather Build on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation

I am currently redecorating this site – a bit of stucco, polishing the floors, hanging plants, etc.  Back in the fall.  Meanwhile, check out what I’ve been up to this summer here.

No texting.  No internet.  No blogging.  No, no, no.

I love it.  I’m currently residing in an emerald green tent in the Northern Cheyenne Reservation.  My first time in Montana.  I’m helping build a sustainable straw bale house through the incredible organization, Red Feather Development Group.

Truthfully, waking up a 7am and working every day does not seem like a vacation.  Yet, I feel like the next week may be worthy of a lot more than golden beaches and tans, pool side lounging, and daiquiris.  It’s my first week on “vacationing” completely on my own.  On my own as in not knowing a single soul.  It’s refreshing … and it’s needed.

I’ll be back to the homestead, NY i love/hate you City, on June 20th.  Changed.

This adventurous couple brightens my day every time I receive a new creative self-portrait from Miss Rose.  Always clever and always playful.  Keep ‘em coming!

Master of all

March 20, 2010

I don’t specialize in one thing.  I don’t want to.  I lean more towards master of none rather than master of one.  Both figures of speech are ill-fitted in the hip and shoulder area.  I’m looking for attire that better suits me.  Preferably with lace and zebra stripes.

How about Master of All?

Sounds powerful.  Sounds like a challenge.

Dream big, and more importantly, do big.  Right?

Moving on to March 20th.  Today is the first day of spring.  It feels fresh – full of kites, cheap beer, burnt hot dogs, and rosy new sunburn.  Yearly aspirations should start today rather than the bleak of winter, January 1st.

I am 27 today.  Rather than listing the things I want to do this year, I’d rather list the hats I want to wear.  It’s open-ended.  Direct paths prohibited.  Figure it out as you go but just get there.

The Different Hats of The 27-Year-Old Kira:

1. Bee Charmer – It’s been my vision ever since I watched Fried Green Tomatoes.

2. Vixen – I received my first astrology reading from my new friend, Ophira of the Astrotwins.  Without revealing details, I apparently have an inner-stripper that is clawing to be unleashed.  Hmm…

3.  Zebra Philanthropist - Striped cocktail event in the works for May!  Hyenas prohibited.  Cheetahs will be given case-by-case consideration.

***I assure you that I am picky with my bonnet and beret collection.  To prove it, I will share another list.

Beanies Kira Will Not Wear This 27th Year:

1. Troll Collector – Been there, done that.

2. Fire Eater – Maybe next year?

3. Mayonnaise Enthusiast

If you feel inspired on this lovely spring day, please share some of your new seasonal hats.

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly, specialization is for insects.”  – Robert A. Fact: This snow angel extraordinaire is not me.

I’m dropping my jeans this Saturday as I cruise around Manhattan naked – for polar bears.

I’m tired of the same ol’ 5K fundraisers.  Yes, these events benefit incredible causes, but I’m sick of running.  Can’t we get a little more creative in our philanthropic events?

I value the zainy element of the Naked Polar Bear Cruise, and I’m always eager to support the Wildlife Conservation Society.  Therefore, I will strip down to my tie-dyed bikini (Yes, I lied, and I won’t be completely naked) on February 27th.

The longer I endure the cold, the more moola I raise for the bears.  My pride is at stake here too.  I’m a tough girl.  I will stick it out for the full hour.

For all of you New Yorkers, come out and play naked this weekend.  Or spectate.  Or just laugh at all of us fools as we freeze our tushies off.

If you miss the boat and want to support the vulnerable polar bears, donate a few pennies or dimes per minute that I withstand the cold.  Email themathematicsofglamour@hotmail.com if interested.

Add water and multiply

January 7, 2010

In ink, I wrote down one resolution for the new year.  Water spilled.  Like the Gremlin, the list multiplied.  I currently have 29 “resolutions” that are rapidly growing into new motives, both evil and pure, for 2010.

As a visual person, I like to gaze at my list here and there.  I often stare blankly at my words avoiding the task at hand, and other times I wonder why I wrote down “Take chances, Kira” when I did tryout for Gotham Girls Roller Derby last year without a shot in hell of making the team.  It’s okay, I’m taking skating lessons this year.  It’s on my list.

I appreciate the fact that I’m trying to be a responsible adult, and I listed, “schedule regular dentist appointments” as a resolution.  Is that a resolution?  Shouldn’t that just be life?  The idealist inside of me wrote down, “Write a book of fiction.  And publish.”  Aim high, right?

My 29th, and currently final item on my list is to “join a bowling league” which I added today … after I signed up online.  Fooled ya, ’10.

Naysayers may suggest that resolutions are cliché.  But I think it is a valuable way to express the multiple voices speaking in our own heads: The wise-ass, The inspired, The sneaky, The immature, The immature pretending to be mature, etc.

Go ahead and get friendly with the personalities you’re dealing with in the year ahead.

And add your resolutions below.
